Come on in for the third place match!

Sweden looking like 180 degrees different from their Netherlands match. England looking totally disorganized and unable to stop Sweden's runs up either side of the field at the moment.

And now Jakobsson scores! I have a fondness for her after the Guardian's MBM, I think, referred to her as striding around the field like the Night King during the Germany match.

Another goal.. England is getting carved up by the mean older sisters.

As well as Hurtig played in the semifinal, Rölfö is a shade more dangerous.
posted by Kattullus at 8:22 AM on July 6, 2019 [1 favorite]

OMG England just had an embarrasing whiff midfield to give the ball away again.

Rolfo is out getting tended and Asllani down, too. Concerning.
posted by TwoStride at 8:24 AM on July 6, 2019 [1 favorite]

Rolfo still down and getting her ankle taped. That's bad. Sweden currently has 9 players on the pitch and play has resumed.
posted by TwoStride at 8:26 AM on July 6, 2019

Rolfo off, Hurtig on.
posted by TwoStride at 8:27 AM on July 6, 2019

Holy cow England just has their best chance (with 9 Swedish players) but some immense defending saved it.
posted by TwoStride at 8:27 AM on July 6, 2019 [1 favorite]

And kind of bad offensive hesitation (and I think that shot wouldn't have gone in anyway?)
posted by fleacircus at 8:29 AM on July 6, 2019 [1 favorite]

Definite hesitation and possibly offside.

Fran Kirby scores for England to pull them back together a bit.
posted by TwoStride at 8:31 AM on July 6, 2019

Kirby made up for it there though!

Sweden, you go through 80 minutes of waffling, and I watched it all. I miss the first 30 minutes of this game, and you score twice? You are cruel.

Ooh, England goal!

WTF how did England just tie this up??
Game on!

And... again!

Ooops, handball on White! No goal!!
posted by TwoStride at 8:35 AM on July 6, 2019

Oh, VAR, you were waiting for me, too. Like shingles.

VAR sees you when you're sleeping.

Wow. Just tuned into this after some Wimbledon and it's been a hell of a six minutes.

Oh I see the ref found a top without yellow on it.

Lindahl has come up big a few times. That was a wild half!
posted by TwoStride at 8:52 AM on July 6, 2019

Really, FIFA? The Copa América and Gold Cup finals are tomorrow, too? Way to respect the womens’ game.

If you had to pick the most malignant thing in football, would it be a) VAR, b) FIFA, or c) Neville’s creepy hands?
posted by GenjiandProust at 9:07 AM on July 6, 2019 [1 favorite]

Oh man that's definitely the fuck/marry/kill of international football.
posted by TwoStride at 9:09 AM on July 6, 2019 [4 favorites]

Ugh now it's Sweden that can't clear well.
posted by TwoStride at 9:11 AM on July 6, 2019

That could have ended badly for Sweden.
posted by GenjiandProust at 9:13 AM on July 6, 2019 [1 favorite]

How on earth do these players manage to chew gum while doing all of this sprinting? I would have choked myself to death.
posted by TwoStride at 9:24 AM on July 6, 2019 [2 favorites]

Lindahl seems to like living dangerously.
posted by GenjiandProust at 9:26 AM on July 6, 2019 [2 favorites]

Can I also just say, watching the American broadcast, that it's so nice to hear two women calling the game? I'm actually not sure I've ever heard that before on television.
posted by TwoStride at 9:28 AM on July 6, 2019 [6 favorites]

Lindahl again with the brave challenge. Lucky for her, none of the England squad were in position.

Yeah, Sweden just a half step to slow on everything and their passing has been getting poor. The overtime from the last match is killing them.
posted by TwoStride at 9:34 AM on July 6, 2019 [2 favorites]

Kirby is so good
posted by fleacircus at 9:36 AM on July 6, 2019

Parris is off.
posted by GenjiandProust at 9:36 AM on July 6, 2019

England just never has anyone to tip the ball in. That's when you need a terrible player who gets lucky over and over again.
posted by fleacircus at 9:37 AM on July 6, 2019 [1 favorite]

Oh, White.
posted by GenjiandProust at 9:42 AM on July 6, 2019

Did Lindahl get carded for time-wasting?
posted by TwoStride at 9:45 AM on July 6, 2019 [1 favorite]

Yes (well, that's what the announcers said?)
posted by fleacircus at 9:47 AM on July 6, 2019 [1 favorite]

You had to pick that up from context, Fox coverage more interested in the wave than the game.

Sweden parking the bus now, but Blackstenius and Jakobsson are always lurking in the back.

Fischer with immense defending again!
posted by TwoStride at 9:50 AM on July 6, 2019 [1 favorite]

England is doing some lovely passing to empty field.
posted by GenjiandProust at 9:53 AM on July 6, 2019

I love watching players wander like 5+ yards away from where a ball went out on throw-ins.
posted by TwoStride at 9:55 AM on July 6, 2019 [1 favorite]

Jade Moore almost got a red card! Apparently lucky for a yellow.
posted by TwoStride at 9:55 AM on July 6, 2019 [1 favorite]

That was a sinister red card flash.
posted by GenjiandProust at 9:55 AM on July 6, 2019 [2 favorites]

Yay Sweden! Rolfo on crutches but very happy!
posted by TwoStride at 9:56 AM on July 6, 2019 [1 favorite]

Everybody looks so gassed!

And that's it, almost ended with a red card!
posted by fifteen schnitzengruben is my limit at 9:56 AM on July 6, 2019 [1 favorite]

Holy cow Fischer headed that one shot, amazing.
posted by fleacircus at 9:57 AM on July 6, 2019 [3 favorites]

Fischer deserves woman of the match for that.
posted by TwoStride at 9:58 AM on July 6, 2019 [1 favorite]

I love the Swedish coach very soberly shaking hands with the English coach, then walking a way a few steps and letting the exuberance come out smiling and jumping up and down.
posted by fleacircus at 9:58 AM on July 6, 2019 [5 favorites]

I keep experiencing new forms of grueling.
posted by GenjiandProust at 9:59 AM on July 6, 2019 [1 favorite]

I love the Swedish coach for no creepy touching!
posted by TwoStride at 9:59 AM on July 6, 2019 [4 favorites]

Phil Neville seems like a bit of a sore loser with his post match comments.
posted by Bunny Boneyology at 10:19 AM on July 6, 2019 [3 favorites]

Shorter Neville: "We didn't want that game, anyway."

Probably too busy thinking up ways for more creepy touching.
posted by fifteen schnitzengruben is my limit at 10:20 AM on July 6, 2019 [2 favorites]

Yeah, Neville needs more media training if he wants to come across as less of a jerk. Even the two British commentators on Fox postgame laid into him for his "nonsense" comment.
posted by TwoStride at 10:27 AM on July 6, 2019 [1 favorite]

I’m still waiting for him to creepy touch VAR.
posted by GenjiandProust at 10:48 AM on July 6, 2019 [2 favorites]

Lars Sivertsen captures the Neville position on the game before and after.

But let's argue more about how Alex Morgan celebrated a goal incorrectly. I never will figure out proper football etiquette, but this whinging on Neville's part is really shit sportsmanship and the kind of stuff you hope to leave behind in little league baseball.

Oh man, that twitter thread has a Youtube link to Neville in his playing days when he seems either very hungover or not very bright...
