Norway-England today!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest VAR will play a role.

Yes, but we will also have to check on VAR to make sure their foot didn't come off the line while making the post.

VAR has confirmed this is a good post!

I'm hoping ever so much to get enough work done today that I can take a late and extended lunch tomorrow to watch USA-France, hoping that it is indeed-- to borrow Megan Rapinoe's phraseology -- a total shitshow circus.

We have settled on a strategy for tomorrow's #USAFRA: I (American) will wear my France jersey along with the boychild, and the husband (French) and the girlchild will wear their USA t-shirts. And we shall cheer for both teams, and hope the winner takes it all the way through to the end.

Rooting for England on account of Mead & Greenwood, also Japan should be playing England (sorry Norwegians).

Greenwood's been pulled for Stokes. I'm not versed enough in the two players to know why to prefer one over the other. To my eye, Greenwood looked a bit ropey late in the last game, so it might just be a fitness thing?

posted by TwoStride at 12:46 PM on June 27, 2019 [1 favorite]

Not sure if this is true, but I'm gonna throw it out : Norway might have a problem when Saevik tracks back to defend. I think Minde moves up in that case and leaves a void, and then she can't track Parris (or whoever makes a run into that space). Gotta stick with your man.
posted by suckerpunch at 1:00 PM on June 27, 2019 [2 favorites]

In the case where I'm describing, the centerback isn't sliding over, too, but that's not a great fix for the problem. The space just moves closer to goal.

Very glad I should be able to watch the rest of the quarterfinals live - I keep adding loads of extended recording time on the matches I record to watch later, which seems to be a bit of a jinx. None of them have been even close to needing extra time, let alone penalties.

Pleasantly surprised by the lack of VAR this match, play really zipped along.

I bought tickets to the semis and finals back in October, figuring I would roll the dice on the USA getting that far. It figures, then, that arguably the most important match of the tournament would be a quarterfinal in a different city. So here I am in Lyon trying to decide where to go to see the match. Naeher is weak. Dunn is in the wrong position and overmatched. Rapinoe is actually a terrible player who somehow gets lucky over and over. Lloyd shouldn't even be on the field. Heath is great but no one ever passes to her so it doesn't matter. The outside backs are vulnerable. The offense is sputtering. Oh btw the US won." WTF?

Agreed, I much prefer some stamped authority to some of the bullshit the refs put up with in the round of16.

At this rate, Italy is gonna finish the match with 10 players.

Sounded like the line judge was encouraging the players "no fouls, no fouls, no fouls" while they were in the corner there.

Germany having most of the possession and attack so far but Sweden with two good chances in the last two minutes.

Goal Germany! Really nice shot from Magull.

I don’t have a favorite in this game. Mostly, I’m hoping no one dies of heat stroke.

I'm definitely rooting for Germany but also hoping everyone weathers the heat ok.

Wow Sweden just tied it up! Game's gonna be interesting now!

That was some goal there.

Of course, I’m worried VAR will discount it....

I'm hoping for a Sweden win. Losing to Germany in the final after crushing the colonials in the semi would be just too painful.

This Germany / Sweden game is so much more quiet than the Italy / Netherlands game. I never thought I'd miss the trumpets. But at least it's not the plastic drone of vuvuzelas!

Great goals on both sides.

Jakobsson and Blackstenius are so dangerous on these runs deep into Germany's line.

We'll see if Germany made adjustments at the half.

Both the goals in this first half were just lovely. I know set pieces are important to the game and the strategies are interesting and yadda yadda yadda, but I do love it when the goals come in the course of play. I am aware this makes me a terribly basic fan.

Do people think VAR is coming up less in the quarterfinals due to a shift in officiating or coincidence?

And another great goal!

Germany has got to get it together. I don't think Schueller is gonna be able to continue.

I think that the level of play is definitely elevated which obviates some of the VAR need, but also they clearly have decided to be less ticky-tacky about, say, handballs. And even this match I cannot figure out what the ref has decided is a foul.

That's the third time Schuller has gone to ground clutching her leg, I don't think she's going to finish this game.

Lindahl seems to like taking chances.

Super disappointed with Germany's play; Sweden wants it far more at the moment. And in particular, I think the German strategy of playing it back so often--in this heat--is not paying off for them at all.

Looks like the heat is taking its toll.

Fischer out for Sweden, they have two subs left.

Germany has 0, Oberdorf having just come on.

And Blackstenius with another breakaway run. Germany's had a lot of possession but they haven't been able to do much with it.

It also looks like Germany can’t leverage any of its advantages....

Lindahl just punched Popp in the head while going for a ball.

Is the unofficial motto of this World Cup “I don’t know what’s a foul/handball/offsides anymore” or is that just me?

Asllani and Jakobsson have been my favorite players of the World Cup so far. Both very creative players who also defend very effectively. And they can read each other’s intentions very well. Asllani’s pass to Jakobsson, before her cross to Rölfö, is what made Blackstenius’ goal possible.

I’m looking forward to Sweden-Holland.

I am glad that I did not go to the German bar to watch the game, that would have been rough!

Blackstenius was a serious threat to Germany all game, she could have picked up another goal if things had gone just slightly differently.

How is it that football players who move with such grace and assuredness while playing the game, look like they’re not coordinated enough to eat yoghurt without incident once they start dancing?
posted by Kattullus at 11:40 AM on June 29, 2019 [4 favorites]

Different skill sets and training; coordination and muscle memory do not automatically translate from one physical skill to another. My spouse is a trained, highly skilled dancer, and I suspect that if asked to get a football around a defender she would end up flat on her face.

Y’all, I (an American) was at both the France-US game and the Germany-Sweden game. Holy hell, the atmosphere at the France-US game was like nothing I have ever experienced before. It truly felt like a final. The crowd was majority supporting Les Bleus, but both sets of fans were at full throat before the anthems. Nothing nasty, just everyone rooting as hard as humanly possible for their side. Just wow, absolutely thrilling to be there (and screaming my lungs out for the US!). The Germany-Sweden game was fun, and great quality of play, but so much more of a relaxed feel. Smaller stadium, more neutrals rather than large contingents for each side, but thoroughly entertaining.

Watching from the stands for the France-US game, I think Crystal Dunn played out of her mind and had her best game at left back by a country mile. Mewis seemed to be off by a half step, I thought she should have been subbed earlier. Overall, a clutch performance by the US when they needed it.

I also have to say, everyone we spoke to in Paris was excited about the game. Random strangers, both French and American, would approach us and start talking about the game (we were in US jerseys) because both sets of fans were so amped up! I love this game.

Yeah, I think most people are looking for it here.

We thought very hard about getting tickets and dragging over to Lyon for the semi but we've done a bit too much driving and training around when we are supposed to be relaxing so I guess we'll watch it in a bar if we can find one or watch it at the hotel with commentary from the mixed bag in here.
