As always with these things, I'm wishing I'd spent the past few weeks rewatching series 1 and 2, but I'm not sure my spirit could have taken a full 3 series back to back, so maybe it's for the best that my memory of the first two is pleasantly hazy.

Sarah Lancashire on absolute fire as ever, along with Sally Wainwright. And everyone else, in fact.

I do worry that the repeated reiteration of exactly when Catherine's going to retire, and her inspiring dreams for retirement, don't bode well for her surviving until her retirement date :/

Some great scene setting in this episode. Happy Valley is great for those scenes of somebody with a digger who nonchalantly points to the corpse they dug up.

I’m from Halifax, and instantly clocked the “police station” as the swimming pool/leisure centre of my youth, which is how I found out it has been shut down. Lots of homesickness watching it, despite the bleakness, and and still an interesting role reversal from all the times I spent as a kid watching where I now live, Vancouver, showing up on tv in various guises.

The very early scene in which she patiently gets one over on her boss was wonderful. A good laugh to start the series.
