I was bemused to to see there was a killer-mermaid tv series being released so soon after the release of the killer-mermaid horror novel "Into the Drowning Deep" by Mira Grant (aka Seanan McGuire). Not that I think they copied her, just that it was a happy coincidence, in that the book left me primed for a monster-mermaid show.

Anyway, I kinda loved this premiere. It's probably not 'good' by any standard, but it's interesting and different, so I figured it merited at least an opening thread.

I thought of Seanan McGuire too! She definitely had the jump on killer mermaids with Rolling in the Deep three years ago, and possibly other short fiction prior to that. When I saw a mention of this show I had a bit of a vicarious hurrah.

I keep looking at her twitter & tumblr page, wondering if she's getting lots of "did you see the rat-eating, rapist-killing mermaid on Freeform?" messages, but no sign of it so far.

I cannot believe I am watching a Freeform show about mermaids. And yet here I am. I am watching it. Ryn was cast very well if they couldn't get Anya Taylor Joy and obviously you can't anymore since she is now a Big Movie Person.

Having the sirens molt into bipeds for... reasons... and then return to Fish Form when wet with salt water is, I suppose, a necessity of the format but I still can't help think of Splash when it happens. And it obviously can only be explained supernaturally rather than cryptozoologically despite the show feeling like it wants to go the latter route. Again, probably no other way to do it that doesn't involve your lead actress flopping around on land and not really getting anywhere. I wonder if you could pour some salt into a pot of water like you're making pasta and toss that on her and she'd go all Daryl Hannah?

Maybe I'm overthinking it.

I should really just relax.

I am on board for this. I'm not sure why I'm on board for it, but I am. Whereas I tried watching Rise, which is totally my kind of thing, and that was meh. Who would have thought that I would prefer the Killer Mermaid show to the Friday-Nights-Meets-High-School-Musical show?
