Yay! I’m super-excited. I wonder if the US attempt at an early goal is going to get any traction against the Holland defense? The US seems to rely on the morale boost from those early goals....

Sitting on the edge of my sofa here in Copenhagen and ready for a SUPER match! Hopefully DK can participate in the next EM tournament.

I remember the times my family and I have visited the men's World Cup tournaments and the feeling and excitement in the crowd must be AMAZING!!

GO team!! Do the sports!! Get the points!!

Alright let's go! Tehre were briefly two balls on the field but neither team fell for it, heh.

I hope Lavelle's hamstring is good and I hope she plays out of her mind again like she did last match.

Usually, as a Canadian, cheering for the Americans feels like its contributing to the USA USA USA jingoism that's always problematic. But Megan Rapinoe has managed to make cheering for the US team feel like it's against all the bad stuff.

So I'm feeling like a neutral, just hoping for a good game. 🇺🇸 🇳🇱

Spitse with a yellow card! Good call.

Rapinoe looking a bit flat, I'd say.

15 minutes gone and the US hasn’t scored. Completely unprecedented this tournament.
posted by Kattullus at 8:16 AM on July 7, 2019 [1 favorite]

These long crosses aren't working out for the US at the moment. Though I guess maybe they can at least hope it'll tired out a Netherlands team that had less rest.

Van Veenendaal is doing her job. I hope no one steps on her this time.

Oh man so close for Lavelle on that corner!
posted by TwoStride at 8:27 AM on July 7, 2019

That was a really great corner. Not thrilled about Sauerbrunn taking a long time to get up, that could have been bad.

I was debating about watching this at a pub today, but my alarm didn't go off so I'm watching at home. Probably for the best.

Ok, Morgan was pretty ridiculous going down on that contact.

Van Veenendaal, such a brilliant damn keeper!

Yeah the Dutch keeper is playing out of her mind right now.

Ok when even all of the Dutch players stop because they think it's a foul you know that Lavelle was fouled.

Ooof, ugly head-to-head collision between O'Hara and a Dutch player.
posted by TwoStride at 8:46 AM on July 7, 2019 [1 favorite]

I love the replays of very deadly looking shots, and amazing saves by the dutch goalie.
posted by fleacircus at 8:47 AM on July 7, 2019 [3 favorites]

That head collision looked brutal. Honestly, if I were Emperor of All Football, players would be automatically substituted after blows like that to the head.
posted by Kattullus at 8:47 AM on July 7, 2019 [8 favorites]

I agree, Kattullus, and I'd give each team an extra sub if someone goes out for a head injury to add a bit more incentive to taking someone off.
posted by TwoStride at 8:49 AM on July 7, 2019 [7 favorites]

That sounds like a good rule, I guess it would remove the strategic pressure to play through head injuries?
posted by fleacircus at 8:51 AM on July 7, 2019 [2 favorites]

Definitely Van Veenendaal for first half MVP.

The officiating has seemed uneven, but I'll take missed calls over VAR breaks.

Rooting for no more scary head collisions for the 2nd half. Otherwise really enjoying this game. We'll see if the US can be as successful keeping the Dutch from their late goals as the Dutch were keeping the US from an early strike.

Holland has done a great job fending off the US attacks, so far.

VAR has been suspiciously quiet.
posted by GenjiandProust at 9:02 AM on July 7, 2019

O'Hara out, which seems like a good precaution.
posted by TwoStride at 9:04 AM on July 7, 2019 [1 favorite]

O’Hara, who had the collision, has been taken off, Ali Krieger on instead. Which is the right thing to do, and I wish that it wouldn’t merit praise, but it does.
posted by Kattullus at 9:04 AM on July 7, 2019 [4 favorites]

I was hard on Dunn during the France game but she is one of the best on this team at winning balls back.
posted by TwoStride at 9:08 AM on July 7, 2019 [2 favorites]

I also kind of wonder if Press should come on for Rapinoe. After all, that worked out well last match!
posted by TwoStride at 9:11 AM on July 7, 2019 [3 favorites]

Stop with the head injuries!!!
posted by GenjiandProust at 9:14 AM on July 7, 2019 [4 favorites]

There’s been no rhythm to the play of either team in the second half, lots of poor passing and misreading of runs. I wonder if nerves are starting to be felt.

What a beautiful pass up field by a Dutch defender. I hope they step up now.
posted by Kattullus at 9:24 AM on July 7, 2019

I thought offside was only called if the player is part of the play... If a ball is rolling out of bounds and no one can get it, it doesn't matter if the offside player is jogging toward it.
posted by fleacircus at 9:25 AM on July 7, 2019

Netherlands have definitely stepped it up but I'm glad to see the US still pressing rather than timewasting. If they try to run the clock like they did against England my nerves won't be able to take it.

If Heath hadn’t tried to nudge the ball to Rapinoe there, Rapinoe would’ve been able to run past the Dutch goalkeeper and defenders and had an open goal to aim at.

yup in case anyone hasn't linked Moira Donegan's terrific piece on Title IX's role in giving us the USWNT (and so much more), here it is . These numbers blew my mind:

" In 1972, when title IX was passed, there were only 700 girls playing soccer at the high-school level in the whole United States. By 1991, the year of the first Women’s World Cup, there were 121,722 high school girl players – a 17,000% increase. That number has more than doubled since: in 2018, there were 390,482 high school girl soccer players."

Two minor points from the post-match ceremony.

1) Rapinoe and LAVELLE getting the golden and bronze ball awards after scoring one each in the final is a bit too on the nose, Reality.

2) Christen Press did a dance step that in just one second made up for all the horrible dancing we’ve witnessed by celebrating teams this tournament.
