Project Runway All Stars: Some Like It Hot Dog
February 6, 2015 7:45 AM - Season 4, Episode 12 - Subscribe

"Marilyn Monroe's timeless beauty inspires dazzling red carpet gowns" and dog costumes. The four remaining designers get $500 and a day to create a gown that is both dazzling (or *sparkly*) and timeless. Lassie is the guest judge. Oh wait.

I feel like both Zanna and Alyssa should have been auf'd this week for their increasingly unflattering/ludicrous garments but instead it is Michelle who finally goes home after a sew-off with Helen. Dmitry upon seeing Zanna in the workroom, realizes that the producers are still trying to make fringe happen and his retro flapper gown wins.

After several apathetic challenges and results to match, I liked this episode. Despite being short on time, with a decent budget for once, Dimitry, Sonjia and Michelle did well. Isaac was scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to find something complimentary to say about Helen's completely ordinary mint-green lace dress and she really should've just been voted off. Michelle's gown was a decent silhouette and well made but the lace pattern was too much like wallpaper. Dmitry was over-praised for his dyed-to-match fringe but he managed to stop short of an ice skater's costume. Loved Sonjia's the best, the gold lace skirt was gorgeous and the wrapped top was suitably dramatic.

I thought this one was fine (except for the Lassie part....we're one away from the finale, so let's make clothes for dogs?), but it was another, "Make a pretty dress" challenge, and while everyone stepped up to the plate, it didn't really go anywhere beyond that. Sonjia had the most interesting design, but I don't know how many people would want to wear a giant, midriff-showing bow on their chest. Dmitri made yet another modified figure skater costume. Michelle made a basic dress with a skanky chain and cool belt loops, and Helen made a nightgown.

The show has to learn that, "We can't decide between the bottom two in the penultimate episode" is done so much now that it's expected, and that no quick challenge is going to convince us that anything is going to happen that's interesting. I think that was a ploy to save Helen, and I think Michelle knew it, so she bombed the challenge on purpose, and made a "pantscho" just to see how ridiculous she could get.

Dmitry's was very well made. I don't think it was elegant. But it was impeccable.

Helen's fabric was beautiful, but I kept thinking Mother of the Bride. When she altered the bodice, it started looking overworked, tortured and shop worn. At that point it looked like it was something picked up in a thrift store and re-cut to be 'modern.' By Molly Ringwold in Pretty in Pink. Hot. Mess.

Michelle picked a feh fabric and showed a dress that pops up on the Runway twice to three times a season. And yes, the damn chain in the back looks cheap. There was NOTHING on the QVC wall that would have worked? You had no string? No spray glue?

Sonja's was ridiculous. The giant bow...it would be memorable, not in a good way. WHO would wear that? No one good.

The dumb challenge at the end, Michelle didn't even try. Helen came up with something wearable. Yay?

If you are enormously pregnant wearing body-con dresses looks silly. I can see your damned popped bellybutton. You are pregnant with TWINS. Drape! Drape! Drape!

Zanna...omg, your outfits are horrible. I will not be subscribing to your magazine.

Ganug with the fringe already!

Alyssa Milano's dress made her look like the Stay Puft marshmallow man.

Also, did I hear that right? They have four days to make the 8 piece finale collection? What?

Dmitry's dress was the dress you wear the Oscars the year after you win the big prize. The "now i can wear what i want to" dress. I loved it.

I like how when that Marilyn was talking, they all had my expression of, "She's suppose to look like Marilyn?"

Does anyone who is a better Googler than me know where I can find the t-shirt Dmitri wore for most of this episode ( the one with the red cross)? I love that shirt.

re Dmitry's tshirt, I thought it was the silhouette of an airplane and loved how it was cropped.

Zanna...omg, your outfits are horrible. I will not be subscribing to your magazine.

LOL. Was I imagining it or did she look a bit sheepish when she entered the workroom?

I honestly don't think she's that self aware. Also, I don't want to see a collection that was thrown together in 4 days. Why bother?

It will be poorly made, uninspired and MOTS from an already shabby and uninspired season.

GRRRR. Show, you anger me!

It also never makes sense. By now they've seen two full seasons of work from these two designers, along with whatever they've done outside of PR. If you can't decide at that point then a hastily constructed garment would never sway you either way. So yeah, I think it was pretty much decided that Helen was going to win.

I started swearing at the screen when for their last challenge, once again they were given just one day. That much said, I was surprised that none was a complete trainwreck, though I did not love Sonjia's and Helen's was just as boring as everyone has said. Michelle was totally and completely robbed, as hers and Dmitry's were the only actual event-wearable gowns.

I zoned out at the end so when I read in this thread they have to do eight outfits in four days, I could only shake my head.

Alyssa was once again struggling to finish a sentence and I wondered if that too tight dress was partially to blame. They probably picked her wardrobe at the beginning and refused to get her new clothes when she got bigger than expected.

Both the dog "challenge" and the one-hour runway challenge were painful, and a joke. (And I'm a dog person! Yes, they were great dogs but that was an idiotic challenge shoehorned in as clumsily as we've come to expect from this show.) Ugh. Is "hate watching" a thing? If so, I guess I am doing that.

This was so much better than last week's snoozefest.

Dmitry smiled! I really liked his dress. I thought it was pretty and of course it looked to be impeccably made, but it wasn't terribly original. I think part of what made it look so great was the model - contrast with Michelle's model who looked bored and could only shuffle in her dress.

Sonjia's dress was yet another semi-transparent long skirt over a short one, the same thing she's done over and over this season. But I thought the top was beautiful and original. I loved the gold/silver fabric.

Helen's dress was so boring and I was really surprised when she said she'd used the lace so you could see the scalloped edge along the hem - because the hem was dragging 4" along the ground.

I'm sure on the QVC wall there must have been some Diamonique jewellery Michelle could have used to accessorise the back of her dress, a backward pendant or something. I thought it was an odd choice of fabric and didn't seem to look good either up close or from a distance.

The dog challenge was silly and I loved Dmitry's reaction to the way everyone else was so thrilled to meet Lassie.

I hate those sudden-death face-off challenges but Michelle deserved to go - not only did she not follow the rules but what she made was fugly. Helen's looked like shit too, but not as bad as Michelle's.

I think the producers want Helen to win, otherwise there's no reason for her still to be there. I adore Dmitry and want him to win, but for originality I'd like to see Sonjia win - she's had some crazy ideas, some of which have ended up looking absolutely great. But I think she lacks focus and might struggle to put a cohesive collection together.

Alyssa is the most pregnant woman I have ever seen in my life. That sticky-out belly button sort of ruined her look this week ...

The producers really wanted Helen to be a finalist this season; the fabric for Michelle's gown had some issues but it was a striking design and fit the model perfectly. Compared with Dmitry and Sonjia's, agree that it wasn't as successful as their designs but Helen's lackluster gown was clearly the worst.

They're pushing this redemption arc for Helen this season but has anyone read/seen any popular support for her? She hasn't grown much as a designer, any of her outfits this time could have easily been from her original season. She has repeated her cape sleeve a few times.

Of course, the producers could've had the judges declare that everyone was worthy and had a four designer finale. It's not like they're showing at Fashion Week. But no, they'd programmed in a Fashion Face Off this week in hopes of injecting a little drama and Michelle ended up getting bounced.

I love Dmitry but I hope Sonjia wins this one. Her first season was all gray/brown/tortured shapes and her runway collection was awful. She used more color this time...and I think I saw some bright colors in the preview for next week.

I love Helen! I don't like her clothes and the dress she made this week looked like what I wore to my 8th grade formal, but I've always liked her. I appreciated that she kept repeating how fucked up the "surprise" challenge was, because yes! Yes it is fucked up! It needs to be said!

That said I think Sonjia should win.

What I have a hard time with is reconciling Helen, who is all tats and angles and severity, with her romantical, ruffled clothing. She couldn't wear her own clothing, it's too much of a disconnect. What's up with that?

This show is so boring and yet I still watch it. I can't figure it out. Guilt of deleted something from the DVR unwatched?
