The bakers get groovy with towering profiteroles. Whose gateau will steal the show?
Glad Georgie got star baker but he is killing it!

Sad about Illiyin but sheโs been much less consistent recently ๐๐ป

Poor Illiyin, because her gateau sounded delicious.
Allison's failed acrobatics were awesome. I love her so much. I'm very happy that Gill made it through, even though she was playing it safe.
Dylan does look very winnerish, but I could see any of the remaining bakers coming through in the end. They've all had stand out moments. There's no one that I think has just floated into the end.

My gut says Christiaan is going to be the bridesmaid til the end and then pull off the win. But, I wouldn't be surprised at any of the remaining bakers winning.
I was a little surprised Christiaan survived the unpleasant to eat cake. I know Illiyin had structural problems on the signature and the showstopper, but I still feel like there was some "well, Christiaan has just missed star baker so many times" karma at play.
When they announced this episode was 70s themed, I said aloud "only one of these bakers could even have been alive in the 70s" and sure enough we had Gill's talking head interview immediately afterwards.
Some strong supportive scenes this episode, between Dylan helping Christiaan out in the signature and Georgie telling Illiyin to stay strong and put on her queen face. This is the content I am here for.

I like Illiyin, and she did well in early weeks, but she has seemed lost the last few weeks. I was not surprised to see her eliminated this week.

I'm rooting for Gill, just because I'm always here for the older women. But I like them all, and I love their support of one another.
(However I'm still sour about Nelly leaving!)

For some reason, this theme annoyed me, I guess because they were so shitty to Brendan in S3 for being stuck in the '70s or whatever. They made fun of him all the time about it, and here they're doing a whole theme. Brendan was one of my favorites so I guess I'm a little salty about that. (Also I'm a '70s kid, so I kind of extra resented it; it's so tiresome.)
Poor Illiyin. It's so hard to watch someone bring their showstopper up when they're crying.

This has certainly been one of the better seasons to me - for some time now, I've gone into each episode thinking "really anyone of them could go home this week." Often there are a few clear top bakers, but this cycle it's been pretty evenly matched. And Allison and Noel are excellent hosts together. I also like that for the most part, the showstoppers have been less ridiculous constructions, and more elaborate bakes you could actually imagine making. I really liked how all of them turned out - at least until Illiyin's collapsed - but it looked really good before it did!
Sad to see Illiyin go, but I think it makes sense - her strength is flavors but she's been somewhat inconsistent with things that are a bit fiddly - and that's pretty much key to patisserie week. The semi-final works best with a set of bakers who are all pretty solid on technique, or at least able to adapt quickly when things go awry. Had the issue only been her showstopper she might have sneaked by, but she didn't do well in the technical and her signature was like her showstopper - close to perfect, but wobbly.
I really think anyone of them could go home next week, though my guess is it will be either Christiaan (for taking a risk that doesn't pay off) or Gill (for not taking enough of a risk - she also doesn't seem to do well on technicals).

I liked Illiyin and I wish she'd had better baking luck all along. She's clearly good with flavours, but she isn't super disciplined about technique-- but why should she be, since she bakes for pleasure and not as a pro?
Dylan, on the other hand, wants to be a pro. Winning this series would launch him on the celebrity-chef trajectory, and that seems to be what he's aiming for. Arguably, he doesn't even need the win: like Selasi before him, he's already made enough of an impression to start a career on. But the win would help.
the primroses were over, I know what you mean about Christiaan vs Illiyin. "Structure collapsed but tastes great" SHOULD win over "looks great, tastes unpleasant". But I guess they decided Christiaan ultimately had more to offer. We'll see whether they were right.
Georgie's piping skills were truly great, even in '70s avocado green and lurid pink.
As ever, Alison is the best thing about Bake Off (and life).
