Changing The Penguin's origin story from high-society outcast to mommy-obsessed fratricide was an unexpected move, but it works. The child actor they got for young Oz was great: did such a great job of portraying Oz's selfishness, loneliness, resentment, love, possessiveness, neediness, ambition, etc.

I think this show did a really good job at setting up Oz to seem like an understandable anti-hero type at first, and then slowly peeling back the layers to reveal that, nope, he really was a villain the whole time. Great subversion of the traditional formula.
