Pitch: The Interim
September 29, 2016 9:09 PM - Season 1, Episode 2 - Subscribe
Ginny tries to fit in with the team despite the resurfacing of a sexist comment made by Al. Meanwhile, Mike copes with the end of his marriage and mortality of his career; and Blip may have lost his lucky shirt.
*Flashbacks of the week - Amelia's husband ended their marriage after a second unsuccessful IVF round; Ginny's brother was managing her in the minors before Amelia came to Texas to pitch herself as Ginny's new agent.
AV Club recap: And yet somehow, despite the speedy characterization attempts, it all more or less holds together. The A plot, following Ginny’s attempts to toe the impossible line of condemning certain male behaviors, but letting the casual sexism of her coach go, worked pretty well. This is hardly specific to the world of Major League Baseball—it’s hard to imagine a woman in the country who hasn’t at one time or another had to think about whether to let gross male behavior go just this one time—but it’s clearly something Ginny is going to have to battle more or less constantly. And for every step forward, like going out for drinks and dancing with the guys or connecting emotionally with her coach, there’s one step back, like when that same coach immediately makes another gross remark.

I'm wondering in what world TV sports commentary is primarily the purview of aggressively snarky women.
Other than that, I really like this show!!!!!!

If the flashback structure is going to continue throughout the season, it explains why they kept Ginny's mother as an offscreen voice in the pilot - why lock themselves into casting such a potentially important role for just a tiny cameo? Now they're free to go anywhere with it. I got the impression that maybe she and Ginny are estranged, but I may just be overspeculating from when Ginny's brother mentioned her.

The world where THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL! (I will watch this all season just for that quote.)
I can't get over how basebally Dan Lauria is. Also I am 100% on board with Joanne Garcia in anything. I feel like Ali Larter has never yet gotten a role that's up to her skills and I hope this role is. Kylie Bunbury is a really good actress.
I also cannot imagine that Jimmy Kimmel would have her do redecorating tips; he'd have her throw nectarines at something particularly smashy. Too sexist even for Kimmel. (Also I think the audience would have interrupted her with applause several times.)

I would hope that Kimmel's show would have subverted the bit, but who knows.
It wasn't a picnic, certainly, but it looked like her agent really dodged a bullet with her ex.
