Chuck: vs the Sandworm
September 30, 2014 5:33 PM - Season 1, Episode 6 - Subscribe

Chuck spots a man wanted by the government. He finds out the man worked for the government, and just desired a new life. Soon he has Chuck doubting his handlers. Chuck has to interview for Assistant Manager.

Halloween rolls around which gives most of the cast a chance to dress up in funny costumes. The best one of all is Yvonne Strahovski in the Slave Leia costume, which alone makes up for this episode's multiple failings.

Chuck and Morgan are supposedly best buddies, and no one at the Buy More wants Tang to be the new Assistant Manager, yet the person who seems to be doing the most to screw up Chuck's chances of becoming AM is Morgan. This does lead to a bit of a falling out between Chuck and Morgan and eventually Morgan comes through, but it's predictably late. Morgan is fast becoming more of an annoyance than a friendly screwball and I think that's Not A Good Thing.

Also poorly handled was Lazlo, the episodes Bad Guy of the Week, who I think we were supposed to feel sympathy for (given he was portrayed as someone Chuck could have been) but he's so twitchy from the get go that you never end up feeling that for him.

It's even more annoying that Lazlo was able to make Chuck doubt Sarah and Casey. Again. Didn't Chuck learn just two episodes ago the folly in doing that? Admittedly, bugging Chuck's room is a bit much, but given what he has in his head, it's probably for the best.

What did work though, and what I feel is strongly becoming the main reason to watch this show, is the relationships forming between Chuck and Sarah and also Ellie and Captain Awesome. This part of the cast has some real chemistry and turns in some surprisingly grounded stuff. This is either a good thing or a bad thing (given this is meant to be a spy comedy aimed at geeks) depending on how you look at it.

I also liked the fact that Chuck was able to end the bomb timer at 7 seconds, because that's such a spy movie cliche that it deserves to be in a show like this.

I'm hoping this show gets better soon and this is just the usual first season teething problems. As it stands right now, I'm finding this show highly average...

Chuck (for me at least) got way, way better in season 2. I've been watching it for the past couple of months (into season 3 now). Season 2 seems more comfortable with what it wants to be, better action scenes, WAY better cinematography (they got rid of the abysmal lighting), funnier, etc. It still has a weird habit of veering from terrible to excellent in a matter of moments, but the first season is definitely weaker in almost every aspect.
