Open Thread: Movies that Feature the Cast of Hannibal
November 30, 2015 5:04 PM - Subscribe

This is a post for us to discuss films or TV shows that feature the Hannibal cast but aren't actually part of the Hannibal canon.

Mads, Hugh, and the rest of the cast have had a pretty prolific career when they weren't busy with this show. Here's a thread for us to discuss which movies to watch, how to watch them, and what we thought after watching them.

We might want to start off by discussing spoiler policy for this thread. At the very least, I feel like we should try to include a spoiler warning, although I'm also okay with us saying no major spoilers whatsoever. (Or we could just say, all spoilers welcome? I'm not super concerned about being spoiled, personally, but I know plenty of other people are.)

Actually, maybe if there are any movies we're specifically interested in discussing at great length, we could do a planned viewing and posting of a specific thread for them as part of Cannibal Club.

Ok, so there is Adam, right, in which Hugh Dancy plays a young autistic man after the death of his caretaker-father and how he learns to cope in the world on his own. And there is also The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman...which, apart from being a vehicle for Shia laBoeuf's visionquest or whatever, features Mads Mikkelsen as the terrifying and gorgeous and terrifyingly gorgeous foul-mouthed mobster of Bucharest, Nigel. Together, these films gave rise to the whole Spacedogs...thing. Which I have not really totally embraced, but there are some fics that feature Nigel and Hannibal as twin brothers which I am totally into. The ones that are just Nigel and Adam are not so much my thing. Though I will probably run out of stuff to read eventually and go for it.

I've seen only a couple of flicks featuring Dancy, but I really liked his (supporting) performance in Martha Marcy May Marlene, which is a great and super-fucking-creepy film in other respects as well. So I would recommend that.

Re: spoilers, there are potentially SO many possible films that could come up considering all the different cast members that I guess it kind of has to be either "no spoilers whatsoever" or "anything goes"? Since there's no conceivable way someone who comes into the thread will have seen every movie that might be mentioned.

I vote for anything goes.

I was so confused when I first started reading Hannibal fanfic and kept seeing Hannibal crossovers featuring this "Nigel" character who was apparently Hannibal's twin brother, and I was just like wtf??? And then I looked up the film and it all made sense.

I'm on board with anything goes for spoilers, as well.

On that note, some spoiler-y thoughts:

I have to admit that I skipped large sections of Charlie Countryman because I couldn't stand Shia LeBoeuf's character, but I did watch every scene with Mads (and most of like the last 45 minutes) and he was so terrifyingly sexy as Nigel, which actually just made the movie as a whole even worse because towards the end, when Gabi is like, "Charlie, did you really believe I could love you after I loved a man like Nigel?" clearly she was supposed to be lying, but at the same time, I wanted to scream, "I don't believe it! How could you love a man like Charlie after Nigel?

I don't care if he's an evil, terrible person. Just look at him and listen to him and watch him. How could you not want to spend the rest of your life naked in bed with that man?

Oh, and what was up with Gabi's accent? I don't know what a Romanian accent should exactly sound like, but I'm pretty sure it shouldn't sound like a Russian or Ukranian accent since Romanian is a Romance language, not a Slavic one. But maybe I'm completely wrong on that?

In general, Mads's non-English speaking films are a lot better imho, although I did enjoy Casino Royale and King Arthur.

Going back to the discussion from the season 3 dvd leak thread, Vildspor was the one full length Mads film I couldn't procure legally (either by renting, buying, or streaming it). I checked US sites, and then I looked at Amazon UK, Amazon in Germany, basically everywhere.

But since I was able to add English subtitles to the non subtitled version, I would like to share it with other Mads/Hannibal fans because it is so hard to come by, and it's worth watching, but I've always personally not been a fan of perpetuating that kind of thing. (I feel similarly torn about watching and sharing the Season 3 DVD leaked material.)

Maybe I'm just hopelessly out of touch? I know most people just pirate this kind of stuff, but it's something I feel uneasy about personally. Except with Vildspor, it doesn't seem feasible to really get it any other way.

As a sort of middle ground, if there are any cannibal club members who do want to see Vildspor and can't find a version to watch, you guys could comment here or memail me, and maybe I'll just share it privately for now.

Adam's Apples, which is not at all Adam, is good if you like really really black comedy. Which I do. Danish black comedy as a whole, actually, is basically my film-nerd jam, and if we had a Danish Black Comedy club I would be the queen of it except no one else would be there but me.

I will say that a rewatch a couple of years made me realize that it was maybe not quite as darkly funny as I remember, and there were a few things that were outright problematic that I hadn't realized when I first saw it circa 2004 (on the film festival circuit before its official release). But I still think it's worth a watch.

Charlie Countryman is dreadful, you can just skip straight through to Nigel scenes and be perfectly happy.

Also, I wish to discuss Hysteria, a.k.a. The Movie Where Will Graham Invents the Vibrator And Is Adorably Flustered A Lot.

Oh, and fwiw, here is how I got my hands on Mads's movies:

Streaming on Netflix US:
A Royal Affair
The Hunt
Michael Kolhass
Valhalla Rising
After the Wedding
Flame and Citron

Amazon prime streaming (US)
Adam's Apples
Flickering Lights
Torremelinos 73 (Mads doesn't have a huge role, but he is very naked at one point, so there's that)
I am Dina (haven't watched all of it; Mads only has a small part as far as I can tell)

Rentable via Netflix US DVD:
The Green Butchers
Pusher 1 and 2
Wilbur wants to kill himself
Open Hearts
Shake it all about
Coco and Igor
Three Musketeers
Clash of the Titans
The Salvation (also available on Hulu Plus)

Purchasable DVDs:
Prague (via amazon; also available on Itunes, unlike a lot of these movies)
Exit (had to get from amazon UK; still waiting because international shipping takes forever)
Bleeder (ordered on amazon US, but it's shipping from the UK)
Die Tur/The Door (ordered from amazon Germany)*

*So important thing I learned from the reviewers of Die Tur on the amazon UK site: Apparently the UK version has Mads's entire role dubbed by an actual German speaker, but the version sold by amazon Germany has an option to listen to either the dubbed version or Mads's original version. I don't have the DVD yet so I can't corroborate this, but it's something to keep in mind.

Adam's Apples, which is not at all Adam, is good if you like really really black comedy.

I actually really, really loved this movie, even though yeah, some things were pretty problematic and I felt kind of torn about that, but I thought it was very funny, and I really loved Mads's character Ivan. I just saw it last week, but I've already re-watched it, because even though it is dark, it is so much less soul crushing than many of Mads's other films.

I feel like I'm still recovering from the pain of watching A Royal Affair, The Hunt, Michael Kolhaas, and to a slightly lesser extent, Prague and After the Wedding. I haven't seen Coco and Igor or Flame and Citron because I have had my heart crushed so many times by Mads's characters that I'm recuperating by watching and re-watching the black comedies and Unit 1, the Danish crime show that Mads did back in the day. It's not like the most amazing thing ever, but it's very watchable and Mads is really cute in it.

Stacey, do you have recommendations for Danish dark comedies that don't feature Mads? I've really enjoyed Adam's Apples, Flickering Lights, and the Green Butchers (and I'm looking forward to getting my hands on Men and Chicken), but I would also be interested in seeing similar movies that don't have Mads in them.

(I know all four of those films are written and directed by Anders Thomas Jensen so I wasn't sure if they were typical of Danish dark comedy or if it's just his particular style. Of course, Danish film seems to be such a small community that I wouldn't be surprised if he is responsible for like 95% of Danish black comedies produced in the last 15 years.)

Also, I wish to discuss Hysteria, a.k.a. The Movie Where Will Graham Invents the Vibrator And Is Adorably Flustered A Lot.

I have not seen that movie but now I feel like I must see that movie.

Coco and Igor is . . . well, its reach exceeds its grasp, I would say. I think someone has put a compendium of all the sex scenes on YouTube, though.

Anders Thomas Jensen is indeed like 95% of recent Danish black comedy. What he hasn't directed, he tends to have written (see: the Paprika-Steen-directed "With Your Permission."). By "recent" though, I should note I mean up to about five years ago. I'm off the film festival circuit these days to my great sorrow, so my access to good foreign film is much more limited, so I don't know what's coming out of Denmark these days.

What I would say is that I trust almost anything involving Anders, Ulrich Thomsen, Paprika Steen, and/or Mads to be worth watching, comedic or not. (In the non-comedic realm, I recall enjoying both Applause and Fear Me Not. I'd have to cast back through my memory for what else I ran across in Ye Olden Days when I had a better grasp on Danish film.)

I haven't seen Hysteria since it came out, when I was considerably less obsessed with Hugh Dancy. But I do recall it being entertaining. I intend to watch it again at some point now that I'm good and obsessed.

Yeah, I, um, may or may not have personally compiled all of the sex scenes from Mads's movies for my own personal amusement.

Yeah, I noticed that he had a lot of screen writing credits on a number of films, although it seems like the dark comedies are the ones he tends to write and direct.

I actually really love what a small world Danish film seems to be, at least based on the slice of it I've seen via Mads's movies. Aside from Paprika Steen and Ulrich Thomsen, Nikolaj Lie Kaas is another actor who comes up in a lot of these films.

Applause is definitely one of the movies I have on my list of Danish films to watch. I'm also really interested to see Vinterberg's first Dogme film, Festen, since it's discussed a lot in interviews about the Hunt, although it doesn't seem that easy to find. I'm pretty willing to shell out for any movie that Mads has been in since my love of him as an actor apparently knows no sane bounds, but I'm less inclined to do that for non-Mads films.

Actually, I have to say, before my Mads obsession, I didn't watch many films, because I apparently have a five second attention span, so I'm not so great about committing to things unless I get invested in them. With tv shows, I don't usually have this problem because once I'm invested in the characters and story lines, I'm perfectly happy to binge watch shows for hours on end.

Of course, at the same time, maybe I just don't like most American movies made in the last two decades? It could just be love of Mads clouding my perception, but on the whole, I've found myself enjoying the Danish films I've seen a lot more, and not just because of Mads, although I haven't thought about it enough to say why I like them better.

I guess part of it is a style thing. Lots of Hollywood films seem to have a very slick style to them which can feel sort of cold or vacant? I don't exactly know how to describe it. Also, the characters in the Danish films I've seen tend to feel much more real and relatable.

I do want to add that Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint?) is also in Charlie Countryman, and I found that kind of hilarious.

And and and the fact that the whole space dogs thing is named after Nigel's dachshund shirt is unspeakably wonderful.

Oh, I forgot to mention Move On which is that crowd sourced type movie that Mads did a couple years ago. It's not the best plot wise, but it's freely available on youtube and Mads is very sexy in it. I especially appreciate that we get to see scruffy!Mads and dapper!Mads not to mention badass!Mads all in the same film. Also, it has lots of beautiful cinematography of various European cities.

Ok, from your list, the only ones I haven't seen yet are the purchasable DVDs. I've seen everything available on Netflix and Amazon.

Once I have a chance to watch the purchasable ones, I'd be happy to chime in on whether I thought they worth watching.

How could we forget Move On? It's true that the plot is sparse, but I thought it was legitimately suspenseful in a fun espionage kind of way. I love the scenes at the wedding. There have been some lovely gifs of him taking drink after drink and getting rowdy.
posted by fancyoats at 6:45 PM on November 30, 2015 [1 favorite]

Yeah, it was thoroughly enjoyable, and I thought the car chase scenes were pretty good, especially the one where they were going down the windy mountain road.

I also really love when Mads gets a hair cut and shave towards the beginning of the movie, because he goes from scruffy surfer dude Mads to basically just looking like Hannibal. Well, until he starts actually acting, because Mads as Hannibal is so tight and controlled, and that's obviously not what he's going for in Move On. I mean, he has that kind of closed off spy thing going, but there's a different feel to it in Move On.

Oh, and I enjoyed the scene towards the end when the woman has him at gun point and does the big reveal about why she tracked him down, because it's a very good example of Mads's ability to emote and cry on command.
posted by litera scripta manet at 7:00 PM on November 30, 2015

Can we just take a moment to talk about Mads's incredible acting range? I mean, maybe I'm just biased because I am so in love with him, but I have seen him in many movies within a span of a month and I feel like he does such a great job of transforming himself, not so much by his clothing and hair style, but just the way he carries himself. It's often very subtle, but he just really seems to become his character in an incredibly convincing way.

Which is a really good thing, because as much as I love Mads in Hannibal, I think it would be hard to watch him in a lot of these other movies if I couldn't distinguish the other characters from Hannibal.

For example, in The Hunt, what makes that movie so compelling is that you spend the first thirty minutes or so just seeing Mads being this adorable guy who is kind of struggling to keep some stuff together but really has a heart of gold. I mean, the scenes where he plays with the kids are just so cute and sweet, and that makes the rest of the movie even harder to watch. (I actually had to pause about halfway through the first time I watched it because it was so painful to see what he was going through.) Also, I kept mentally screaming, GET A LAWYER but I'm pretty sure that's just because ask mefi has trained me to think that way.

Or maybe that's more of a US thing? Having watched non-US crime dramas, they seem to be much more comfortable interrogating suspects without them having lawyers present, which I guess could just be a TV thing, but maybe it's also because of the different legal approaches. For example, I think maybe I heard somewhere that in the UK or maybe other European countries it can be used against you if you don't cooperate with the police during questioning? Um, I may be completely making that up though, and I also recognize that film is not a great place to obtain this sort of information.

If I ever do actually get a tumblr up and running, I'm really tempted to do some photo recaps for Hannibal episodes and Mads's movies because I have so many thoughts and SO MANY SCREENCAPS. Hannibal is so cinematic and Mads is so beautiful, how can you not want to take screencaps of that? Okay, maybe I didn't need hundreds of screencaps from each movie or episode, but whatever.

Although mostly I feel like I only see gifs and screencaps with jokes scribbled on them so I'm not sure if tumblr is really the right venue for that kind of thing. Oh well, they're still nice to look at.

That's good to hear! I'm super excited to see it since I so much enjoyed Mads in previous films written and directed by Jensen, and it's always nice to have a Mads film that won't completely rip my heart into a million pieces.

I've looked around for info about a DVD release (either in the US or in Europe with English subtitles) and haven't had much luck so far. From what I've read, it seems like the DVD has only been released in Denmark although it looks like it's still doing the rounds at film festivals internationally.

I stumbled across this reblog of a tumblr post that the original doesn't seem to be there anymore. But anyway, it's a masterlist of all Mads' movies, with direct links to watch them, and they all have subtitles. And it includes Rejseholdet (Unit One) -- 32 episodes (are there more than that?). I thought it would be relevant to our interests.

And so...I watched Die Tur yesterday. It was the dubbed version, unfortunately, but it wasn't too distracting. The voice actor they got for Mads actually sounded a fair bit like him. I thought it was very poignant, watching David get a second chance at his life, and how it all unravelled slowly. If you transport all the future people back in time, the past just...turns into the present again?
posted by fancyoats at 2:21 PM on January 2, 2016

And I also realized I never came back here to spill my Feelings about Vildspor. Like I said to you privately before, LSM, I got a strong unrequited love vibe from the two of them - Mads and Nikolaj, within the first fifteen or twenty minutes, even watching without subtitles, which only got stronger once you sent me the subtitled version and then I got to watch it properly the whole way through. The reveal of how long they spent together traipsing around the globe didn't do much to dispel that notion. They are, like, the original Murder Husbands. Objectively beautiful faces, the both of them. I can't even. Also, did Jimmy used to have a matching neck tattoo with Ossy? But got it removed?

I won't be watching it, but... I wish they would embed clues that this is Abigail Hobbs crossed over to another world. I guess they wouldn't be allowed to do that outright, but if they did it in a way that you need the eye of faith to see it, I'm sure they could get away with it.

But I BET they won't do this. I BET they won't. Because it's such an obvious missed opportunity that OF COURSE they will miss it.
