It makes you wonder if there were ways of closing the other vortices without ambering them.

Yeah, good point Elementary Penguin. The original rift, after all, was caused by Walter's inability to come to terms with Peter's death (and alternate Peter's likely death). We don't really know how most of the other rifts were created - are they all related to strong emotions? Even Olivia's ability to move between the two universes originally seems powered by strong emotions.

I always liked this episode. In some ways it's just the Monkey's Paw done with multiple universes and a sweet true love rather than horror, but it's done well. And hey, it inspires Olivia to get over her hurt and do something practical to make it go away rather than brood some more. So that's also good.
