Announcement: Old Timey Film Club!
August 12, 2015 8:22 AM - Subscribe

Come join the Old Timey Film Club for black-and-white film discussion!

Posts appear every Tuesday; please do add your name next to the film if you'd like to volunteer to create that particular movie post on FanFare. I believe you can do this once you join the club. Just don't go nuts - pick one or two and let others pick what they want.

The only thing I ask is that if you volunteer be prepared to include at least one link, ideally 2-3 of background material you found online concerning the movie that you find interesting. This is to make the post more rich and hopefully spark discussion as people read reviews, great blog posts about the movies, or other linked material.

(If there are no volunteers I don't mind doing them all.)

I started with a handful of my favorites - what are yours? I don't want to get over-ambitious so I put a few on the schedule (maybe too many) so folks can plan their TV watching schedules.

Hope you join!

Sounds like some good watchin'. Where's the schedule posted?

Here - on the sidebar to the right: Old Timey Film Club

(Also there is a little "Clubs" link on the main FanFare page, like, 4th line down you'll see a line of linked text: "Recent Posts / FanFare Talk / Clubs / Recent Comments / Watercooler" - you can view all the clubs in one place. Nicely organized!)

Hope to see you all there I look forward to the discussions.

I'm super excited for this club. About 10 years ago I started making my way through 30s and 40s films via Netflix DVD. I've seen a lot but there's still so much to see - and also, you can watch the classics dozens of times and still be entertained. looking forward to the discussions!

Great we've got a good group of folks now - that'll be good for discussions! Welcome all.

I was thinking last night that I could add a Groucho Marx / Marx Brothers film but I've tried to watch and like Duck Soup so many times and I find it tedious. If someone wishes to add a Marx Bros. film they can as long as they're willing to do the post as I probably won't want to watch it! :)

I mean, there's really so many black and white movies you *could* add, but I want to keep it small and begin with this handful of movies, see how it goes. We can revisit towards the end of the run.

Right there with you on the Marx Bros., and I've tried many times. I mean, I'm glad they existed, but the joke-on-joke patter gets really old fast.

Duck Soup is one of the few movies I've ever seen that made me laugh so hard I literally couldn't breathe. I'd happily do a post. However, it seems like we've got movies through the end of the year right now, so I'd say let's stick with the schedule we have and if we're still having a good time we can tack more movies on the end. I The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, personally.

Ooh, and also I'd like to do a Busby Berkeley movie. Maybe Gold Diggers of 1933 or Footlight Parade?

Sure! Pick one and slot it in after Sergeant York and before It's a Wonderful Life. Place your name after it in brackets to reserve it. Ta.

Could selectors consider what is available to stream online? I'm not saying every selection has to be online, but lack of access will affect participation. My little town still has a specialized movie rental place with a great classics section, but that's pretty uncommon. (Don't forget to check your local library, though!)

Streaming Online (legally, as of today, at least in the US, YMMV):
  • Sunset Boulevard: Netflix online or DVD; rental via Amazon/Apple/Sony; purchase via Amazon/Apple/Vudu
  • Double Indemnity is not available
  • Queen Christina: Netflix DVD; rental via Apple/Vudu; purchase via Apple/Vudu
  • The Great Dictator: Hulu Plus online; Netflix DVD
  • The 39 Steps (1935): purchase via Apple
  • Some Like It Hot: Netflix DVD; rental via Vudu; purchase via Vudu
  • It Happened One Night: Netflix DVD; rental via Apple/Vudu/Sony; purchase via Apple/Vudu
  • A Streetcar Named Desire: rental via Apple/Vudu/Sony; purchase via Amazon/Apple/Vudu
  • Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is not available
  • Blithe Spirit is not available
  • Arsenic and Old Lace: rental via Apple/Vudu; purchase via Apple/Vudu
  • Casablanca: rental via Sony
  • The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938): Netflix DVD; rental via Amazon/Apple/Vudu; purchase via Amazon/Apple
  • Sergeant York: Netflix DVD; rental via Amazon/Apple/Vudu; purchase via Amazon/Apple/Vudu
I noted if Netflix has it on DVD, too, but I did not note if it was available for purchase on DVD.

I selected all of the movies listed; yes, your local public libraries will have many of these (if not all) and if they do not they may be able to loan them via intra-library loan.

Yes! Awesome! I'm in! Thanks for starting this, JCIFA!

Btw, searching for "[title] full movie" on google usually brings up some site that has it.

Hi, I added one! Did I do it right? (And is it super dorky that I'll probably create the post weeks in advance? :) )

Thanks so much for setting this up, and I CANNOT WAIT for the discussion on Some Like It Hot!

YOU DID IT RIGHT! Many thanks, Orange Dinosaur Slide - I was thinking of adding that movie!

Any other volunteers please do feel free to put your name in brackets next to the movie so I will know not to create a post on it - appreciate the help!

Whoever put "Diner at Eight" on the schedule please do put your name next to it in brackets - thanks! And thanks for your contribution!

TO EVERYONE: Please do put your name in brackets next to a movie already listed, if you see a movie you'd like to write the FanFare post for.

Okay I have no idea who put up Dinner At Eight but I guess they'll reveal themselves when the time comes. Exciting!

Tomorrow for the Criterion On Hulu club, I'll be posting To Be Or Not To Be, the 1942 Ernest Lubitsch film starring Jack Benny and Carole Lombard. It's an astonishing film, a bracing black comedy with a surprisingly modern insouciance. The opening's narrative twists and turns are right out of a Charlie Kaufman film.

The film is streaming free on Hulu this week here. I spoke with jcifa, and we agreed that it would be a great fit for this club as well, so I'll be cross-posting it here.

Sorry I didn't give you guys more of a head's up...it didn't occur to me until just now that this film would be a great entry for this club as well.

Whoops, I am your mystery host for Dinner at Eight. Will add my name shortly.

Anyone else up for Carol Reed's "The Third Man"? Just rewatched it as I do periodically. .. what a great flick. I did a Fanfare search but didn't see it in the first few pages of results.

Yes, put the Third Man up! I've been meaning to watch that.

I wish I could do a double bill ... maybe two consecutive entries will come close. Scheduling now.
