I kept watching hoping that Ivy's justification for joining would be explored in greater detail. I don't think it ever will be, as I don't think this is that kind of show. Is anyone else who is watching familiar with the other AHS seasons? Are they all this... flimsy?
I think I'm enjoying more as I just lean into the stupidity of it all. It is just like many horror films of the past 20/30 years - everyone is stupid, nothing makes any sense, and you're really just watching to see how everyone dies. I heard critiques of Alien: Covenant that were grumpy about how the characters of those films lack the intelligence and depth of the original Alien (and Aliens) but if you look at them as typical horror movie characters, they aren't so bad. This feels the same way.
The switcheroo of this season was the idea that this happens in the "real world" because of the 2016/2017 backdrop, but I'm seeing that the world of this show is in no way our world, because the characters don't behave in any way like normal humans. You could say the same for 100 other shows on television, but those shows didn't start with a (loose) basis in our version of reality.
Someone mentioned Parks and Rec in the comments last week, and that's a great comparison because Pawnee was in no way a real place and Leslie and her gang were in no way very realistically portrayed, but damn they were fun and likable. These characters are neither fun nor likable, so I'm left asking myself, why am I watching this? I guess I like the actors enough to keep it up. But damn. It is real dumb.
