Due to the violence portrayed in the series, and the violence occurring at the time in Japan, the series was briefly canceled and "Mish-Mash Blues" (fansub transcript; part 1, part 2) was created. The characters provide a philosophical commentary, set to hip-hop loops and played over clips from the first 12 episodes, and it ends with the words: "This Is Not The End. Reunited, Spike and Julia pick up where they left off in their plans to escape Red Dragon, but it is soon foiled by Vicious. Spike returns to the Bebop for one last farewell, knowing that he will likely die before he can return, and then storms the Red Dragon's headquarters to confront Vicious for the last time.

Left alone by the rest of the crew, Spike and Jet are ambushed by members of the Red Dragon syndicate. While heading to Mars, the Bebop is diverted to Earth, where Faye decides to investigate her past by traveling to the landmarks she sees in the video she recorded as a child, taking Ed along with her. Meanwhile, Jet and Spike go after what looks to be a lucrative bounty.

There's a new popular religious cult, calling itself SCRATCH, which is based on the belief that an individual can achieve eternal life by digitizing the soul and uploading it into the Internet. Spike, Jet and Ed notice Faye in some news coverage of the cult, which has been tied to a number of missing people and suicides. When Spike and Jet see that the cult's leader, Dr. Londes, has a sizable bounty on his head, they get involved.

While Spike is after the Teddy Bomber, he comes across Cowboy Andy, the other bounty hunter that criminals fear. Spike, Jet and Faye have each caught a number of perpetrators, but they're no closer to the mastermind, whose lone signature is a pawn device, loaded with a saved chess game.

Meanwhile, in a restaurant on Jupiter's moon, Ganymede, Spike and Jet are scoping out their next bounty, only to be interrupted by an impromptu display by the Space Warriors, a group of environmental terrorists who are out to save the Ganymede sea rat from people. There's a messy bit of monkey business, but don't worry, next time we'll make money. (I should have seen that coming.)
