Book: The Most by Jessica Anthony
It’s November 3, 1957. As Sputnik 2 launches into space, carrying Laika, the doomed Soviet dog, a couple begin their day. Virgil Beckett, an insurance salesman, isn’t particularly happy in his job but he fulfills the role. Kathleen Beckett, once a promising tennis champion with a key shot up her sleeve, is now a mother and homemaker. On this unseasonably warm Sunday, Kathleen decides not to join her family at church. Instead, she unearths her old, red bathing suit and descends into the deserted swimming pool of their apartment complex in Newark, Delaware. And then she won’t come out. A riveting, single-sitting read set over the course of eight hours, The Most masterfully breaches the shimmering surface of a seemingly idyllic mid-century marriage, immersing us in the unspoken truth beneath. Movie: Catherine Called Birdy
In Lena Dunham's movie adaptation of the YA book: "A 14 year old girl in medieval England navigates through life and avoiding potential suitors her father has in mind." Perhaps taking cues from Marie Antoinette and The Favourite, Birdy explores coming of age in 13th century Stonebridge Manor, interrogates women's place in society there and then (and here and now), and rebels against its social strictures with irreverent wit and verve as she experiences heartbreak and loss -- but also glee and delight -- with friends and family along the way to a (somewhat) unconventional comedic conclusion.

Book: The Lost Apothecary
This book was my prize from the white elephant book exchange at a Christmastime book club meeting. The story bounces back and forth between early 1800s London, where the secret apothecary exists to help women rid themselves of abusive or cheating husbands, and modern day London, where 30-something Caroline is rediscovering her love of history on a solo 10th anniversary trip that her husband missed because he was cheating on her. It's a really fun and well paced suspense story that will keep you interested until the last page as the historical story unravels while Caroline closes in on understanding what happened, 200 years later.
It's also a story of a woman reconnecting with the things that bring passion to her life, while coming to terms with her decision to junk it all 10 years ago to get married.

Book: Indians on Vacation
"My wife loves to travel. It's one of her great treats and it's one of my abject horrors." ... "I always wondered what I was going to be able to do with all the travel that my wife drags me off on. Book: Shirley Jackson: A Rather Haunted Life
This "historically engaging and pressingly relevant" biography establishes Shirley Jackson as a towering figure in American literature and revives the life and work of a neglected master.
Still known to millions primarily as the author of "The Lottery", Shirley Jackson (1916-1965) has been curiously absent from the mainstream American literary canon. A genius of literary suspense and psychological horror, Jackson plumbed the cultural anxiety of post-war American more deeply than anyone. [more inside]

Lodge 49: Estrella y Mar Season 2, Ep 5
Marriages are tested, tried, discussed, considered, and re-considered. Alchemical truths (the magnum opus, making gold, finding the elixir of life and becoming immortal, "an endless catalogue of bullshit") are enjoyed. A psychic is consulted, about life and ponies. And there's a brief, violent interlude with a nail gun, which might just be the nexus for positive changes.
Lodge 49: Conjunctio Season 2, Ep 4
"Well, guys, this is my speech. Long ago, at Shamroxx, we served french fries. But here we serve Pommes Frites. They literally come out of the same bag, and we charge twice as much. It's magic. So, let that inspire you." Also, there's a robbery, an attack with a frying pan, the closing of a door, and a marriage.
Book: Furiously Happy
In Furiously Happy, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jenny Lawson explores her lifelong battle with mental illness. A hysterical, ridiculous book about crippling depression and anxiety? That sounds like a terrible idea. But terrible ideas are what Jenny does best. As Jenny says: "Some people might think that being 'furiously happy' is just an excuse to be stupid and irresponsible and invite a herd of kangaroos over to your house without telling your husband first because you suspect he would say no since he's never particularly liked kangaroos ... Book: The Way We Never Were
The definitive edition of the classic, myth-shattering history of the American family Leave It to Beaver was not a documentary, a man's home has never been his castle, the "male breadwinner marriage" is the least traditional family in history, and rape and sexual assault were far higher in the 1970s than they are today. In The Way We Never Were, acclaimed historian Stephanie Coontz examines two centuries of the American family, sweeping away misconceptions about the past that cloud current debates about domestic life. The 1950s do not present a workable model of how to conduct our personal lives today, Coontz argues, and neither does any other era from our cultural past. [more inside]
