Semifinal 2 of the 2017 contest begins Thursday, May 11th, at 2100 CEST / 3:00pm Eastern, with results announced ~2 hours later. Most of the world can watch via the main Eurovision YouTube channel. Fans located in the US, Canada, and Brazil have to deal with geoblocking. Use a VPN with endpoints outside the US to access the stream on YouTube, or use the delightfully Swedish feed from SVT.

Ten down, ten left to go! Semifinal 2 of the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest features another ninete-- er, eighteen countries vying for the final spots in Saturday's Grand Final. With Russia disqualified, who will the diaspora vote for? Can Romanian yodeling make the Grand Final stage? Can Lithuania stay out of dead last place? Will Ireland ever qualify again? We'll answer those questions and more, after these messages from our sponsors.

I'm going to dip in quickly for predictions (I'm live-tweeting later today) before the show starts. It's harder to predict than Semi 1.

CERTAIN QUALIFIERS:
Romania
Netherlands
Belarus
Bulgaria
Austria

NOT A HOPE IN HELL:
San Marino
Malta
Lithuania

Everyone else could go to final. It's pretty open.

(Anyway, Macedonia has a cracker of a song that most pop stars would kill for. It's just unfortunate that the songwriters have chosen to waste it on Eurovision and Jana. I'd love for Kylie to record it).

I have too many favorites today. Top picks Belarus, Croatia, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, the Netherlands, Romania, and Switzerland. Austria, Estonia, Norway, and Serbia are also up there.

Every act I was really interested in performed on Tuesday, or is already in the final. So I'm hoping today some act I hadn't really noticed before will just blow me away.

Don't let me down, Romania. I need you to do that "Yodel It" justice.

My predictions (which are not necessarily the same as my personal favorites): Austria, Belarus, Bulgaria, Denmark, Hungary, Israel, Macedonia, Netherlands, Norway, and Serbia. This semifinal is WIDE open and I don't expect to get very many of these right. I will legitimately cry if the Netherlands don't make it through.

Yessssssssssss!

I'm not picking faves ahead of time; I've been a good girl this year and am mostly going in cold, except for OG3NE's number which has been constantly on the radio since it was announced. (I am super grateful it finally pushed last year's interminable "Slow Down" off the radio, and my one regret is that it didn't actually push Douwe Bob off a cliff with it. Said cliff, this being the Netherlands, would be a hill about 2m high so he would totally survive, but my point would be made.)

I can't wait. Bring on the fog machines and regrettable costume choices!

The Austrian sounds like he has a southern US accent. Why?

I'm not 100% sure, but I suspect his English language teacher might have had a bit of an accent. I know Lena from 2012 had a very Cockney accent to her singing voice because that was her language teacher's accent.

It feels like everyone's productions are so simple and boring this evening. Where are the hamster wheels?

I felt that a lot so far this week. It's like everyone's budgets were cut - there's a ton of "singer stands center stage with lots of moving video projections behind."

Romania, with the yodeling - man, I'm SO happy that's in the final, cuz I cannot WAIT to see my friends' reactions.

Croatia, with the multiple personality duet - wow. Just.... wow. Not the good kind of wow.

I really like Hungary's song. I have no damn idea what it's about (will have to go google a translation) - but I really like his voice, I like the ethnic/folk feel with the mix of modern rap style.

Netherlands - I mean, that's the best channelling of Wilson Phillips I've ever seen. It's practically a cover of "Hold On." Can't say I like the song at all but I do appreciate their singing - they sound great.

I didn't spend a lot of time picking favorites, but it feels like the songs I liked most tonight all got through to the finals, so I'm pleased.

I haven't been able to watch the semis, but I'll be here on Saturday for sure!

The biggest Eurovision story out of Sweden right now surrounds the Verka Serduchka "being stalked" interlude, which used Astrid Lindgren's "Karlsson on the Roof" characters without permission. The company that holds her copyrights is not amused, apparently... (Google Translated story from Expressen here: "Karlsson on the roof theft in Eurovision can be expensive for the organizers.)
