We've got a sleep deprived Justin, a seafaring Travis and a Basketball Camp-trained Griffin for this special, onion-packed episode. We have no energy, y'all. BECOME OUR ENERGY. Suggested talking points: Worf Birth, Still Home Improvementing, Unorthodox Firefighter, Sacred Lunch Time, How to Start Gaming, Tommy's Funeral

This had some of my favorite and least favorite stuff in it. I know he’s kidding but for some reason when Justin talks about how stressed out parenting makes him it makes me feel exactly as stressed out as he sounds and I don’t like it. I feel like it’s the kind of joking that works better when you know the person because you have enough actual knowledge about that person to suspend your belief so to speak. I dunno maybe it’s just me.

But my favorite thing is when one of them says something I’m thinking, which was “Wow Griffin really likes going in on Tim Allen”. So that made me laugh.

I also like when they’re at the end of goofing about a question and they just quickly drop the actual real answer at the end and then move on. For some reason this makes me feel comforted and secure. Like yes the world makes sense and some questions have answers and some people know what they are and it’s not even a big deal it’s fine. Some things are fine.

This is a space for honesty and compassion.

No lies, I'd be interested in a sandwich exploding with onions.

I don't know Justin but I do know having a second child. His stress sounds pretty sincere to me.

That they didn't connect their idea of The Timallen being a mantle passed down after killing the last Timallen and the plot of The Santa Clause was maddening, like an itch unscratched.

I bet they're gonna get a lot of tweets.

I like to use fanfare to mention stuff like that because the last thing they need is one more "bu-bu-but what about The Santy Clause" tweet.

I took the Timallen mantle thing to be built from The Santa Clause. So, it's not like they didn't extend the joke--
that was the joke all along. They just didn't explain why the joke's funny.

The parts with Justin being stressed about parenting were my favorite! Possibly because my second child is due to arrive in about three months, and I have already been asking myself semi-seriously "Oh god no, what have we done? What were we thinking?" every dang day, while simultaneously knowing that we'll get through it all just fine. The fact that he can joke about the stress in a way that's funny and also sincere is very comforting to me.

It delights me so much that they're all dads now and talk about babies a little bit on the show sometimes.

Yes, I found it pretty clear that they were riffing off of the famous Tim Allen movie where he murders Santa Claus in front of his son and finds himself afflicted with the Santa curse. I imagine there are many people out there who are unfamiliar with this movie, just like there's people unfamiliar with Tim Allen in general. I guess they do a somewhat OK job of explaining who Tim Allen is, that he was the Tool Man in a show called Home Improvement, and something to do with Toy Story, so maybe there's something there for people with no prior Tim Allen experience, but I don't think they needed to go so far as to state that Tim Allen once killed Santa and took on his identity.

If the boys did a bit about Mark Hamill finding a laser sword and developing psychic powers would you be upset if they never mentioned Star Wars? I find this reaction very fascinating.

Anyway, Be advised that two kids is still Not A Big Deal because generally speaking there are two parents involved so you can each take a kid one-on-one. Beyond that, you suddenly find yourselves outnumbered playing Zone Defense and let me tell you, the stress one experiences at that point makes the stress of one or two kids pale in comparison.

It's not an upset reaction (and the "I find that fascinating" thing is kind of condescending btw). It's like a musical phrase that doesn't resolve or, as I said, an unscratched itch. And also only a flippant unserious reaction because who would be upset?

Sorry, I don't mean to be condescending or rude. It can be difficult to say "What is clear to me is not clear to you" without sounding like a dick, please understand that is not my intent.

It seemed clear to me, but perhaps that is more due to my Tim Allen background being very similar to the McElroys' background. We share the same Tool Scars so they're speaking directly to me when they posit a world where Timallen is a mantle passed from generation to generation (via terrible violence).

I suppose this is kind of like the "meat juice" bit from the previous episode. I could see people going insane if the boys concluded Meat Juice just didn't exist. This would be like a joke where they say Meat Juice doesn't exist but then go on to describe how broth is made as if they're inventing it on the fly. It would be possible to miss the context clues that show the boys are being deliberately obtuse, leaving one wondering if they truly know what broth is. To be fair in the actual bit they legitimately didn't remember broth until halfway through.

In conclusion, comedy is a land of contrasts, and it's always a gamble when you take anything for granted.

Seconded, hard. Listening to Justin was like listening to myself just after my second was born - love her to bits but holy fuck what did we do WE HAD IT SO GOOD.

I have never understood why, having had one child (as I have done), anyone would ever go on to have another. It's probably good that they do because otherwise we'd have a real crisis on our hands, species-wise, but I don't understand it. One is hard enough.

Especially when you get a good one first. Ours was a good sleeper and while he's a fussy eater even now that he's in kindergarten, he'll eat well enough if we coax him. You don't rock that boat. It's like spinning the roulette wheel, winning, and then immediately dumping it all back for another go round.

I'm probably going to be having my third one later this week, but definitely some time in March. Last week my wife and I repeatedly looked at each other and said "why are we having a third?" while picking up pools of jello off the floor and holding back the hair of a barfing six year old.

Reproduction is a hell of drug.

Not even once kids. Not even once.
