Mystery Science Theater 3000: YONGARY, MONSTER FROM THE DEEP Rewatch
July 12, 2018 1:42 AM - Season 11, Episode 9 - Subscribe
Rewatch! Another giant lizard terrorizes an Asian city, although this time it's Seoul, not Tokyo. Along the way we meet a perfectly obnoxious little boy. Previously.
THIS MOVIE!
As a kid, my dad and I got this from a drug store that also rented movies (Phar-Mor) and watched it. I loved it, sobbing at the end, and it's one of the movies I remember best from our Phar-Mor rental days. It took me years to confirm that it even existed, because I couldn't spell the title.
I'm reluctant to watch it again because I'm sure my feelings about it are totally unjustified.

As an episode, it's great, reminiscent of the best of the Gamera movies.
As a movie, it's mostly goofy, but it does go for serious pathos at the end.

A kaiju named Gary? Sounds very MSTworthy. Didn't see it when it first aired (no Netflix), but if it was produced when Trump & Kim were tossing insults at each other, with Seoul between them ducking, I kinda hope they didn't do anything news-related in the riffing.

This is the only MST3K movie I’ve watched in ages. A woman who is a big fan and I had a “let’s watch MST3K together” first date (coolest first date that didn’t make it to a third date, but hey).
I was utterly convinced that the “itch-ray” thing was going to result in the astronaut hero dude becoming Kaiju #2. Good job frustrating my expectations, movie!
Bad job understanding anything about space, or seismology, but then, hey, if it was good it wouldn’t be on MST3K!
That kid, man.

The whole season was written and filmed Summer/Fall 2016, so it was a little bit before we all got plunged into Darkest Timeline™. Either way, current head writer Elliott Kalan (aka Dr. Varno) has said in interviews that he specifically came onboard MST3K because he basically got his fill of doing current political humor during his previous gig as Daily Show head writer. The fact that there is generally a several month lead time between production and "airing" on Netflix also limits how topical they can be, which is good for keeping things fairly light and breezy.
