Star Trek: Lower Decks: A Mathematically Perfect Redemption
October 6, 2022 7:55 AM - Season 3, Episode 7 - Subscribe

AKA "The Littlest, Nastiest Robot" or "This Is Not Your Father's Redemption Arc"

Memory Alpha had plans to get away to Freecloud, become a dabo girl, never settle down:

- The Drookmani were first seen in S1's "Terminal Provocations", Peanut Hamper in "No Small Parts", and AGIMUS from S2's "Where Pleasant Fountains Lie."

- The plot strongly resembles that of Avatar... you know, that one movie that supposedly no one cares about, even though people will go way out of their way to claim that whenever it's mentioned.

- Yeah, putting a whole bunch of megalomaniacal AIs together... what could possibly go wrong?

"How I long for the touch of your nozzle."

- that one owl-guy to Peanut Hamper

"We're just gonna have to wing it."

- Peanut Hamper to that one owl-guy

Poster's Log:

Hot hot bird-on-bot action! And I like the designs of the Areore and their ships, even if their planet name (Areolus) makes my inner tween giggle.

I liked how this twisted the Star Trek trope of "it's okay that we broke the Prime Directive...this time it helped people."

I was astonished that, like, two or three minutes in, Mrs. Fedora accurately predicted that the final shot of the episode would be Peanut Hamper in the megalomaniacal self-aware AI storage facility

just Babe Ruth pointing up at the stands

Really glad that they were willing to stick with "Peanut Hamper is the worst" here. Also, this continues the trend of Lower Decks really ramping up the creativity and plot action towards the end of the season. Seems very likely that we can expect something with PH and Agimus, but I also don't trust Admiral Buenamigo (who was introduced in the season premier and has shown up a time or two since then) at all.

Well, this was certainly an episode of a television show.

Peanut Hamper is just the worst and it's kind of amazing. I hope she continues on her journey and starts calling all organics "meatbag."

Yep I also have suspicions about Badmiral Goodfriend

This was bold (Boimler!) and risky and I'm not sure I consider it an unqualified success. It absolutely succeeded in keeping me guessing throughout. At first, I wondered if Peanut was voiced by a special celebrity guest whom I hadn't noticed in the first Peanut episode, and that that was why they went with a Very Special Episode. Then, I wondered if Owl-Hunk was a special guest voice (and when he said "That is the way of things" I *so* wanted to believe it was Phil Morris).

But THEN when Peanut's inherent badness was re-revealed, I concluded that what we are seeing here is the start of a story arc. Has to be. They wouldn't reuse the Raiders gag simply because they got Combs and Hertzler back. If I'm wrong, then I really don't know what to think about this ep.

But if I'm right, then I wonder if LD is gonna bring in Picardo's The Doctor pretty soon. To fight AI, you want an AI.

It's reminiscent of Avatar the way it's reminiscent of every white savior uplifts the primitives movie. Avatar was just one of the biggest and prettiest. They missed the part where the discarded partner of the love interest tries to sabotage them though. At first I expected that she would have turned out to be the one to call in the scavengers.

I thought this episode was fantastic! Hurray for the Worst Ensign who is terrible and learned nothing!

Okay, bringing back The Doctor, especially with the throwaway reference to him a couple episodes back, would be super nice.

Favorite throwaway bit: at the wedding. PH is wearing a veil (okay) and a fake beak (whut?). Why is she wearing a fake beak?

This episode was fantastic. I love how the animation and designs recalled the original Animated Series.

I’m a total sucker for shows that occasionally mess with their credit sequences, and this one was no exception.

Also, a lot of the animation in this one was gorgeous. Kinda does seem like they spent a bit more on this one than normal.

I had totally forgotten about Peanut Hamper and thought that entire ‘previously on’ was just made right up….and honestly that would have been baller.
