Mystery Science Theater 3000: THE SKYDIVERS   Rewatch
October 18, 2018 12:47 AM - Season 6, Episode 9 - Subscribe

Rewatch! And...oh hell. We're back in Coleman Francis territory. The least interesting(!) of the three films he made that MST covered, I seem to remember it's about skydiving, marital strife and murder via parachute. Honestly, I have tons of trouble staying awake through this one. I recommend coffee over alcohol. At least one of the show's best shorts, Why Study Industrial Arts?, is also in this episode. Previously.

Coffee over alcohol is one of my favorite libations! I recommend hazelnut joe with a tot of brandy for this one.

Eh, this has always been my favorite of the Coleman Francis trilogy. The narrative is fairly straightforward and there are bizarre characters to see along the way (and the riffing is aces). In comparison, "Red Zone Cuba" is a nonsensical fever dream and "Beast of Yucca Flats" is such a grim story in a desolate wasteland you half expect Tor to come across Viggo Mortensen pushing a shopping cart.

I had a good Dad moment when I watched "Why Study Industrial Arts?" with my kids:

Kid 1: Hey, this is the same as "The Home Economics Story" but for boys.

Kid 2: ...that's really sexist!

Yeah but does it have anything as nonsensical and yet still bizarrely ominous as "flag on the moon..."?

How did it get there?

(To everyone:) Hey, why not join us for MST Club? We have it Thursday nights at https://cytu.be/r/Metafilter_MST3KClub. It starts Thursday nights at 7 PM Eastern time (that's 4 PM Pacific) with a preroll movie, then we watch that week's episode at 9 PM Eastern (6 PM Pacific). We have a nice little chatroom beside it that we use to add our own impromptu jokes to the proceedings. I hope you can make it!

I recommend New Holland's Dragon's Milk stout over coffee ice cream.

The industrial arts short is by far my favorite. My best friend and I still quote it to each other however many years later.
