Mystery Science Theater 3000: THE MAGIC VOYAGE OF SINBAD
May 11, 2016 4:57 PM - Season 5, Episode 5 - Subscribe

"All the Magic of 'Stone Flower' All the Power of 'Alexander Nevsky' All the Artistry of 'Grand Concert' Highly Recommended for Children" A strangely Russian Sinbad, upset with corruption in his home town of not-Bagdad, searches the world for happiness. This is the second of the Russo-Finish movies MST did, imports from the Soviet Union directed by genius filmmaker Alexandr Ptushko. Originally it was Sadko, a film production of an honest-to-goodness opera! One composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov! Vibrant, wonderous, astounding, and with music from the opera, this is much better fare than the SOL usually got. It is also a terrific episode, because the writing is the Brains at their best, and the movie, for all its wonders, is incredibly strange. Get your popcorn ready folks, this is one of the best. Every week, we of the Fanfare MST3K Club watch that week's episode of the show, together, in a video-enabled chatroom on the internet. This week's show, as it has been lately, is at https://cytu.be/r/Metafilter_MST3KClub, at 9 PM Eastern time (that's 6 PM Pacific) Thursday night. The club FAQ (a little out of date) is here.

Even when the show is not running, we try to have some videos ready to watch there for people who want to jump in. I'm trying to be better about having that week's episode be among the rotation. I may start having the fill-in material being a loop of the last three weeks' episodes, for the benefit of folks who may have missed them. What do you think?

I haven't been doing this (and a video enabled chatroom would probably be in my morning) but as a fan of Sinbad films, you haye just have programmed my Friday night.

Note, the movie is a Sinbad movie in name only; it was renamed thus when the distributor brought it to the US because the name was more marketable than Sadko. Still, it's a fun movie, and has a somewhat similar feel in the sense that a lot of it is seafaring adventure.

After watching this, it's all I can do to avoid going around to people and talking and gesticulating like crypto-Sinbad. "Good shopkeep! I would like one of your finest sodas, poured in a glass over crystals of ice! For this, I will exchange these counters of value, totaling up to a dollar and sixty-three cents, after applying my discount card!"

There will be more talk like this (and the Brains' reaction to it) once we get to the third of the Russo-Finnish movies, 617 THE SWORD AND THE DRAGON.
