Mystery Science Theater 3000: ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES, with short UNDERSEA KINGDOM, part one  Season 4, Ep 6

"Crawling Horror...Rising from the Depths of Hell to Kill and Conquer!" Rednecks are disappearing and the sheriff won't listen that they've been caught giant leeches living in caves beneath the swamp. Oh well, it isn't anything a bunch of dynamite can't handle. With short UNDERSEA KINGDOM, Part 1: In this first episode of a 1936 serial, "Crash" Corrigan and friends (including a Professor, a Kid, and a Woman) dive beneath the sea in their rocket sub to the lost city of Atlantis. Everyday-wear in Atlantis is, shall we say, flamboyant. The short is the oldest thing ever riffed by MST3K. I find the conclusion of the movie particularly hilarious. Although they know that the leeches may be keeping their victims alive in underswamp caverns, the "good guys" still throw in bundles of explosive, killing leeches and victims alike. The movie was remade in 2008! Executive Produced by Roger Corman, and Regular Produced by his brother Gene. YouTube (1h31m) Premiered July 18, 1992. [more inside]

Strange Club Announcement: The Reflecting Skin (1990)

Results are in! For Nov. 16, we'll be watching The Reflecting Skin, a British-Canadian horror-drama from 1990. It's about a young child growing up in rural Idaho in the 1950s. Anything more would be a spoiler. It's been a while since I've seen it, but I remember it being rather psychologically harrowing, so heads up.

Scream Queens: Pilot  Season 1, Ep 1

In the latest horror-comedy-farce from the minds of Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy, the audience is introduced to the Kappa Kappa Tau sorority, which is being haunted by a figure in a red devil costume. Grace Gardner is our heroine (of sorts), who comes into the sorority as an effort to find out what happened to her mother so many years ago in the same house. Chanel Oberlin is the current queen of the castle in KKT, and her general unpleasantness guides the opening intrigues of the show. Crusty old dean, Cathy Munsch, has cracked open the exclusive club of KKT (much to Chanel's dismay), leading a band of misfits to rush the sorority, and provide a cast of red shirts who will likely be picked off as the season progresses. Movie: The Serpent and the Rainbow

Released four years after the first Elm Street movie, The Serpent and the Rainbow (trailer) drops Bill Pullman into the middle of 1970s Haiti to investigate cases of alleged real-life Voodoo zombification. One of Wes Craven's more religious-themed movies, with a premise loosely based on the (arguably) non-fiction book by the same name, the film gives Craven a chance to build upon a real-world mystery in applying his signature concoction of visually stylish horror, twisting storylines, and the oft-blurred line between the dream world and reality.

Movie: Evil Dead II

When friends Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell set out to turn their 1978 short Within the Woods into a full-length film on a shoestring budget, what they came up with was The Evil Dead; a nauseating film, sure, but also a thunderstorm in a bottle that managed to splice black comedy with innovative technique to make a hugely beloved cult horror mainstay. But how could anybody follow up such an apparent fluke with a sequel? Well, if you're Raimi and Campbell, you take another run at the same story, with the insanity turned up to 11, and in the process you practically invent a new genre of film.

Movie: The Night of the Hunter

If ever there was a movie that could be called "virtually indescribable," this one is it. Loosely, though, it's about a con artist (Robert Mitchum) posing, or at least halfway believing himself to be, a traveling preacher who, during a short prison stay, meets a man sentenced to death, one who had stolen and hidden $10,000. The would-be preacher learns that the man will soon have a window (Shelley Winters), and an idea is born. What follows is half-gritty Depression era crime tale, half Southern Gothic/Grimm Fairy Tale (and or Good vs. Evil fable), as he tries to track down the money, via the widow's children. Now playing through July 23 at Watch TCM, available with a cable sign-in. [more inside]

Movie: Killer's Moon

TALES FROM THE WHEEL OF SCHLOCK... In this instalment, we find a truly deplorable exploitation film that figures on two outdoor enthusiasts, a busload of British schoolgirls waylaid on a trip to a singing competition, and four Kubrick inspired escaped mental patients who of course have been dosed with LSD and told that they're in a waking dream. I mean, why not. (Warning: The film contains scenes of sexual violence) [more inside]
