Mystery Science Theater 3000: HAMLET   Rewatch
October 20, 2022 2:02 PM - Season 10, Episode 9 - Subscribe

Rewatch! Hamlet (a prince)'s dad (so, the king) is killed by a guy who wants to marry his mom, so he pretends to be crazy to gather evidence of the murder. It's a German production of the famous play, with two of the voices being Ricardo Montalban and John Banner. It's cut down a lot for time and has sparse sets. This is a challenging one. Previously.

!!! This is the first confirmation I've had (I missed this one "Previously") of my strong suspicion that that was actually Ricardo Montalban as  Clavdivs  Claudius. Awesome, thank you.

This is a favorite, though the first half is easier to watch than the second half. I wish Rifftrax would do another Shakespeare movie.

Glad he unfolded himself, he was pretty creased up there.

Also one of my top MST3Ks. I love the first scene between Hamlet and Horatio, and Hamlet says, "The funeral baked meats did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables." The little laugh Mike gives when he cheerfully says "So it all worked out then" kills me every time. I'm giggling right now just typing this.

There are so many TV movie Shakespeare films that they could do, with some very heavy hitters. The BBC complete series from the late 70s - early 80s has, among others, Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, Patrick Stewart, Anthony Hopkins, Bob Hoskins, Derek Jacobi, John Cleese, and about a billion other ubiquitous classically trained British character actors slumming it on TV from the era. Any of them would be perfect.
