Book: Tacky: Love Letters to the Worst Culture We Have to Offer, by Rax King

In an oral history of Bat Out of Hell that appeared in Classic Rock magazine, Meat Loaf has claimed that two Ivy League professors performed a “psychological test” in the “U.S. Medical Journal” (all quotations sic) to determine the subjects’ state of mind, using the album as a litmus test. Per Meat Loaf’s interpretation of this test, any listener who doesn’t like Bat Out of Hell is psychologically unsound. This sounds exceptionally incorrect, but as a lover of this album, I agree that its emotional highs and lows feel informative. I trust people more when they admit that they love this album as I love it; I trust them less when they offer the same old critiques of it, the predictable way my proto-irony guy did. “Meat Loaf?” he said doubtfully when I made my suggestion. “I can’t have that in my Spotify history.”

Mystery Science Theater 3000: SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL  Rewatch   Season 6, Ep 14

Re-rewatch! (wait, really?) A fairly bog-standard pilot for a TV show from 1970, about the people and events at a major airport. This one did make it to series, but with an almost entirely different cast. File this under Seventies-tastic. This is the third time MST Club has done this one, since it somehow made it into the best-of poll we did a few years back. Previously and again.

Below Deck: Below Deck (all Seasons)  Season 0, Ep 0

Below Deck (IMDB) is a workplace reality TV show that follows the lives of a crew on a mega-yacht during a season of short charters. Cramped quarters, wild parties obnoxious guests (Screenrant), and glamorous international locations, all proved a big draw for from season 1 in 2013 - up to an abrupt stop in season 8 when the show ran into... well...2020. The making and editing of the show is an interesting story in its own right - as a super-yacht is turned into a floating TV studio operating 24 hours a day (NYT). [more inside]

Mystery Science Theater 3000: CRASH OF MOONS  Rewatch   Season 4, Ep 17

Rewatch! As I mentioned the previous time this episode has come up, the title of this is reported in the episode as "Crash of THE Moons," but on the title card of the movie it's "Crash of Moons." It's the other compilation of Rocky Jones, Space Ranger TV episodes repackaged as a movie; the first was 413 MANHUNT IN SPACE. This is the one with John Banner, Sgt. Schultz himself as a jovial space guy. There's a General Hospital clip included as a short as well. Bit of a content warning, the TV show was made at a time in which the G-word, for Romani (and shared as a name with the show's big purple robot), was more commonly used, and the guys on the show make reference to it often. In MST3K's most recent incarnation (the stage show), it should be noted, this character has been rechristened G.P.T. Previously
