Book: One Summer

In One Summer Bill Bryson transports readers on a journey back to one amazing season in American life. Over a few months in 1927 Lindbergh made his historic flight, Babe Ruth hit 60 HRs, The Jazz Singer was filmed, and the first working TV was demonstrated. Also, KKK membership was growing rapidly, Eugenics was becoming accepted as normal, thousands of Americans were dying from alcohol purposely poisoned by the federal government, and thousands more died when the Mississippi river flooded and the Federal government ignored it as not their problem. It was one hell of a summer.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: PARTS: THE CLONUS HORROR  Rewatch   Season 8, Ep 11

Rewatch! Considering the political reality of the USA right now, this movie's almost charming with how the villain is an evil Senator's brother, who runs a farm for stupid 70s people, clones of "important" folk, you know, like senators, to serve as living sources of spare body parts. Especially hilarious is the pseudo-Orwellian culture of the farm, which is like a sinister community college. Previously

Podcast: Scene on Radio: That’s Not Us, So We’re Clean

Movies for the Current Administration Club

Inspired by this comment, would folks be interested in assembling a club to watch and discuss films in the context of the current U.S. administration and/or the rightward tilt of the world? The idea would be to draw from a broad base of films, albeit with more of an emphasis on things that can create uplift or provide guidance about how to go forward rather than pure criticism of the present. Asking because I am terrible at running clubs, but sort-of-okay about joining them. [more inside]
